Inhalt: The book studies the past of the characters in Aeschylus and Sophocles, a neglected but crucial topic. The characters' beliefs, values, and emotions bear on their view of the past. This view reinforces their beliefs and their conception of themselves and others as agents of free will and members of a family and/or community. The study reveals that, although the characters' idea of the past is fixed, the impact of the past is not. The characters consider, review, and construct narratives of it, as they seek to mould a future they perceive as morally just for themselves and others.

Inhalt: Dionysos erscheint innerhalb der modernen Wissens- und Darstellungsformationen oft als untypisch für die antike Kultur, als Ausnahme im Kontext des antiken Polytheismus, ja als Instanz einer Differenz, die die Moderne antizipiert. Was können neuere Forschungen zum genaueren Verständnis der vielfältigen Transformationen des antiken Gottes beitragen? Dieser Frage widmen sich Vertreter aller Bereiche der Altertumswissenschaften in diesem Band, der aus einer internationalen Tagung im März 2009 im Berliner Pergamonmuseum hervorgeht. Eine vergleichbare Publikation liegt bisher weder in deutscher oder englischer noch in anderen Sprachen vor. Zu den in dem Band behandelten Themen gehören aktuelle Forschungsfragen - einschließlich wissenschaftsgeschichtlicher Aspekte - zur Stellung des Dionysos im Rahmen der antiken griechischen und römischen Religion von den Anfängen bis zur Spätantike (Riten und Festkultur, Mythen, Epiphaniekonzepte, Theaterpraxis, Architektur und Ökonomie der Heiligtümer), anhand von - zum Teil neuentdeckten - epigraphischen, literarischen, bildkünstlerischen, historiographischen und philosophischen Quellen.

Inhalt: Within modern frameworks of knowledge and representation, Dionysos often appears to be atypical for ancient culture, an exception within the context of ancient polytheism, or even an instance of a difference that anticipates modernism. How can recent research contribute to a more precise understanding of the diverse transformations of the ancient god, from Greek antiquity to the Roman Empire? In this volume, which is the result of an international conference held in March 2009 at the Pergamon Museum Berlin, scholars from all branches of classical studies, including history of scholarship, consider this question. Consequently, this leads to a new look on vase paintings, sanctuaries, rituals and religious-political institutions like theatre, and includes new readings of the texts of ancient poets, historians and philosophers, as well as of papyri and inscriptions. It is the diversity of sources or methods and the challenge of former views that is the strength of this volume, providing a comprehensive, innovative and richly faceted account of the "different" god in an unprecedented way.

Inhalt: So far, the critical writings of Dionysius of Halicarnassus have mainly attracted interest from historians of ancient linguistics. The Ideology of Classicism proposes a novel approach to Dionysius' œuvre as a whole by providing the first systematic study of Greek classicism from the perspective of cultural identity. Drawing on cultural anthropology and Social Identity Theory, Wiater explores the world-view bound up with classicist criticism. Only from within this ideological framework can we understand why Greek and Roman intellectuals in Augustan Rome strove to speak and write like Demosthenes, Lysias, and Isocrates. Topics addressed by this study include Dionysius' view of the classical past; mimesis and the aesthetics of reading; language and identity; Dionysius' view of the Romans, their power and the role of Greek culture within it; Greek classicism and the contemporary controversy about Roman identity among Roman intellectuals; the self-image as Greek intellectuals in the Roman empire of Dionysius and his addressees; the dialogic design of Dionysius' essays and how it implements a sense of elitism and distinction; Dionysius' attitudes towards communities competing with him for leadership in rhetorical education and criticism, such as the Peripatetics and Stoics.

Inhalt: Since Terzaghi's edition (1939) no new relevant data were found illustrating the textual history of the Synesian poetic corpus from Late Antiquity to the Palaeologan Byzantium. Thanks to a new inspection of the main manuscripts and the enucleation of thematic and structural incoherencies, hitherto unnoticed, it seems possible to restore the structure of the hymnodic corpus as it was before its original pattern was damaged and modified by late Byzantine editors. Specific researches are devoted to: (1) the displacement of the ninth hymn (originally intended to open the hymns series); (2) the beginning of a new hymn with the last verses of the ninth; (3) the merging of two hymns into what is now the first hymn and a new assessment of the last part of the same piece (according to the Neoplatonic theory of the soul); (4) the real purpose and nature of the hymns 6-8 (uncorrectly considered "tout court" as christological), and the original structure of the eighth hymn (to be divided in two different poems). Moreover, the study of ancient and late antique metrical and musical theories reveals hitherto unexpected features about both production and performance of Synesius' hymns.

Inhalt: Despite their marginal existence in research, Utopian novels written in the Hellenistic period were very popular in Antiquity and inspired a number of authors in the modern period (Th. Morus, T. Campanella). This book tries to close this gap in specialist literature: the author takes a close look at various utopian writings, however, the book is not only limited to analysis of the writings, it also discusses their philosophical, historical, ethnographical and geographical context.

Inhalt: Die in der hellenistischen Zeit entstandenen utopischen Romane fristen in der Forschung eher eine Randexistenz, obwohl sie sich in der Antike großer Beliebtheit erfreut und auch in der Neuzeit viele Autoren (Th. Morus, T. Campanella) inspiriert haben. Diese fachliterarische Lücke will die Studie schließen: Der Verfasser beschäftigt sich mit verschiedenen utopischen Schriften im Detail; jedoch beschränkt sich die Untersuchung keineswegs allein auf deren Analyse, sondern erörtert darüber hinaus ihren philosophischen, religionswissenschaftlichen, historischen, ethnografischen und geografischen Kontext.

Inhalt: Der vorliegende Sammelband gibt einen Überblick über neue archäologische Forschungen zum antiken Kultgeschehen. Der Band vereint unpubliziertes oder von der Wissenschaft bislang vernachlässigtes Material, stellt aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse vor und eröffnet den Blick auf weiterführende Fragestellungen. Verfasser der einzelnen Beiträge sind junge Nachwuchsforscher, aber auch renommierte Wissenschaftler mit Spezialisierung auf diesen Themenkomplex. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit widmen sie der topographischen Situation der Heiligtümer als Zentren kultischen Geschehens und den verschiedenartigen Gaben an die Götter, die an den sakralen Orten abgelegt oder in ihnen aufgestellt wurden. Mit Hilfe des archäologischen Befundes sowie unter Einbeziehung weiterer Quellen lässt sich im Idealfall - und wie in einigen Beiträgen vorgestellt - auch die rituelle Praxis rekonstruieren. Andere Autoren wiederum gehen den mythologischen Überlieferungen nach, insofern diese häufig als Aition für Kulte dienten. Inhaltlich deckt der Band damit nahezu das gesamte Spektrum der Beschäftigung mit der antiken Ritual- und Votivpraxis ab; gewidmet ist er Uta Kron, die zu den besten Kennern antiken Kultgeschehens zählt.

Inhalt: Lucian of Samosata met a two-sided fate: on the one hand he was attacked for philosophical and theological reasons; on the other he was admired for the command of the Greek language and the stylistic elegance he displays in his writings. The origins of this twofold attitude towards Lucian seem to date back to the exegesis devoted to him by Arethas, archbishop of Caesarea, which is integrally examined for the first time in this publication. Inhalt: This book concerns the field of the history of philological-grammatical exegesis and ancient scholarship. Over recent decades this line of research has aroused lively interest, and noteworthy advances in knowledge have been achieved. In comparison with the state and trends of studies in the mid-20th century, the scenario now appears radically changed: editions of texts, preparation of reference tools, in-depth investigation on personalities, problems and movements have led to substantial progress in our understanding of these aspects of ancient literary culture.The five articles that make up this book discuss both general questions and more specific points. Franco Montanari deals with the form of the Alexandrian ekdosis on the basis of the relationship between the library artefact on one hand and the text as an object of editing on the other. Lara Pagani treats the problem of the origins of the study of language in Greek Antiquity and specifically in Hellenistic scholarship. Paola Ascheri investigates the ideological position adopted by Rome in the age of Augustus in its relations with the Greek world, on the basis of her research into the Homeric scholia and in POxy. 3710. Inhalt: A close analysis of the Republic's diverse literary styles shows how the peculiarities of verbal texture in Platonic discourse can be explained by Plato's remolding of tropes and techniques from poetry and the Presocratics. This book argues that Plato smuggles poetic language into the Republic's prose in order to characterize the deceitful coloration and polymorphy that accompanies the world of Becoming as opposed to the Real. Plato's distinctive discourse thus can transmit, even to those figures focused on the visual within his Republic, the shiftiness of the base and the unjust.
