Content: This work provides new editions with introduction and commentary of five odes from Pindar's Nemeans. Three celebrate victories won by Aeginetans at the Nemean games (Nemeans 4, 6, and 8). The remaining two are drawn from the appendix to the book: Nemean 10, for the Argive wrestler Theaeus and his family, including the famous myth of the Dioscuri, and Nemean 11, for the installation of a prytanis on the island of Tenedos. The commentaries elucidate problems of metre, text, and interpretation, and provide up-to-date treatment of the language and subject-matter of the poems.

Content: Die lateinische Literatur der Spätantike löst weiterhin Befremden aus, obwohl die Philologie seit einigen Jahrzehnten eifrig bemüht ist, ihre besonderen Voraussetzungen zu beschreiben und ein ausgewogenes Urteil über sie zu fällen. Die vorliegende Göttinger Dissertation versteht sich als ein Beitrag in diesem noch andauernden Prozess der Neubewertung spätantiker Werke und versucht eine Gesamtwürdigung von Cassiodors Urkundensammlung Variae. Unter Berücksichtigung der neuesten Forschung werden die literarischen Konventionen herausgearbeitet, die Inhalt und Gestalt des Werken geprägt haben (gattungsspezifische Vorgaben, ästhetische Vorlieben und philosophische bzw. christliche Hintergründe). Nur die Kenntnis dieses komplizierten Regelwerks ermöglicht es, die Ziele des Autors zu beschreiben und zu erkennen, in welcher Weise sich die politischen und gesellschaftlichen Umwälzungen im Italien des 6. Jahrhunderts im Werk niederschlagen. Der große Abstand, der den heutigen Leser vom spätantiken Autor trennt, kann niemals vollkommen überwunden werden. Dennoch kommt das Buch zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Variae Cassiodors Elemente einer politischen Ideologie und einer literarischen Ästhetik enthalten, die ein modernes Interesse an dem Werk begründen können.

Content: Most modern readers find the Latin literature of the late antiquity obscure, if not outright bewildering. Over the last decades, classicists have made considerable efforts both toward describing the specific literary conventions observed in these works, and also toward formulating a balanced appraisal of their theoretical, literary and aesthetic merits. The book at hand, originally submitted as a dissertation to the University of Göttingen, seeks to contribute to this burgeoning literature, by offering an overall assessment of Cassiodor's Variae, a compilation of official state documents. In light of the most recent developments in the field, the author diligently traces out the application of traditional writing conventions in the construction of these documents (content and assertions of the underlying "genus", aesthetic standards and philosophical resp. Christian background). Only a thorough grasp of these conventions makes it possible, not only to identify and describe the author's objectives, but also to reveal the pathways through which the political and social upheavals of 6th century Italy find their way into the passages of the Variae. Even though the large distance separating modern readers from the late-antiquity can never be entirely bridged, this book demonstrates that Cassiodor's Variae contains elements of a political ideology and a literary aesthetic that transcend the narrow confines of the author's times and render his work both stimulating and relevant to this day.

Content: The categories of this historical astrology study are derived from the actions of projection and reflexion of sociomorphic models (E. Topisch): Which earthly example of doryphory ("speer bearing") is projected on the heavens? Which celestial phenomena are described as doryphory, and where lie the analogies of earthly example and heavenly effigy. The author systematically translates and analyses all Greek and Roman sources on planetary doryphory up to the 7th century, as well as selected later sources up to Kepler.

Content: This reference work provides a tool with which the scholar of Byzantine literature can speedily establish the identity, authorship and place of issue of a poem from its opening line. It provides an alphabetical listing of the opening lines of some 20,000 Byzantine poems - profane and religious, edited and unprinted, in the literary and the colloquial language - from the beginning of the 4th to the 15th century. Apart from broadly-based compositions and epigrams it also takes account of all types of poetic inserts, monosticha, notes by copyists, owners and readers of manuscripts, metrical work and chapter headings, marginalia and end-notes, together with metrical scholia. Each opening line is accompanied by all the necessary information on the author, subject, place of issue and length of the poem. The work is completed with a listing of all the Byzantine authors "ed.

Content: The Greek inscriptions of regions extending from the Persian Gulf to the Hindu Kush are traditionally dealt with by specialists in oriental studies, and are little known to wider circles of scholars interested in the ancient world. This work contains about 100 texts with translation and commentary. In the style of a reader it draws attention to interesting topics such as: the decrees of the Indian king Ashoka Piyadassi, which contributed to the spread of Buddhism; texts documenting the palace administration of the Seleucid rulers or the history of the Parthian princes; the trade carried on by caravan of the Persian king Shapur and his defeat by Septimius Odaenathus in command of the Roman forces.

Content: Herodianus, born around 180 A. D., represents a very important witness for the historical reconstruction of his age. The last critical edition of this author dates back to 1922: it was published by K. Stavenhagen in the Teubner series. Since then there has not been any revision of Herodianus' text; so the edition of Lucarini is a real desideratum in the field of Classical Philology. He has made a new investigation on all the manuscripts which transmit Herodianus' work and he has taken into critical account all the secondary bibliography on it which appeared in the last decades.

Content: Herodianus, geboren um 180 n. Chr., gilt als wichtiger Zeuge für die Geschichte seiner Zeit. Die letzte Neubearbeitung wurde in der Bibliotheca Teubneriana 1922 von K. Stavenhagen vorgelegt. Weltweit existiert keine Neubearbeitung des Textes, so dass die Edition von Lucarini von der Fachwelt mit größtem Interesse aufgenommen wurde, zumal er eine neue Durchsicht aller Handschriften vorgenommen und die Literatur der letzten Jahrzehnte zu Herodianus exakt aufgearbeitet hat.

Content: This study constitutes the first modern book-length, in-depth critical analysis of Ovid, Metamorphoses 13.623-14.582. In this unit Ovid, by challenging openly the artistry of his great predecessor Vergil, redraws the parameters associated with the definition and appreciation of epic poetry. The book first introduces the methodological complexity of the Ovidian embrace strategy, and, subsequently, it reads the 'little Aeneid' closely, discussing the network of allusions to its prototype. It assesses the structure and thematics of each episode in the cluster, and traces the recurrence of prominent motifs throughout the Metamorphoses. Not least, it explores poetics, arguing that Ovid's selective incorporation of the Aeneid reproduces the spirit and fundamental ideas of the model in an idiosyncratic sophisticated manner.

Der Kommentar stellt das Werk nicht nur in den kulturhistorischen Kontext, sondern untersucht auch das Besondere an Apuleius' Sprache und Stil. Die reichhaltigen und eingehenden intertextuellen Bezüge der Florida zur früheren griechischen und römischen Literatur werden ebenso umfassend gewürdigt wie die ausdrücklichen Verbindungen des Werkes zum Mittelplatonismus, zur Zweiten Sophistik und zum übrigen Werk des Apuleius, insbesondere zu seinen philosophischen Schriften.

Content: The Florida, an anthology of 23 orations that Apuleius of Madauros delivered primarily in Carthage during the 160's A.D., offers a rich store of evidence about epideictic rhetoric, Middle Platonism, and the civic and intellectual life of the North African provincial metropolis. In addition to locating the work in its historical and cultural context, this commentary investigates Apuleius' remarkable language and style. Full attention is given to the rich and complex intertextual relationship of the Florida to earlier Greek and Roman literature, as well as to the work's extensive links to Middle Platonism, the Second Sophistic, and the rest of the Apuleian corpus, particularly his philosophical works.
