    Inhalt: This book presents the first collection of the earliest West Germanic bridal-quest narratives together with a comparative study of them. In contrast to earlier studies, the author locates the origin of this narrative tradition in the oral and written Germanic literary tradition, a result that leads to a re-assessment of the genesis of vernacular German and Scandinavian literature. The chapters deal in chronological order with the Latin chronicles of the Germanic peoples and with the early Latin and vernacular literature in Germany and Scandinavia.

    Inhalt: The Florida, an anthology of 23 orations that Apuleius of Madauros delivered primarily in Carthage during the 160's A.D., offers a rich store of evidence about epideictic rhetoric, Middle Platonism, and the civic and intellectual life of the North African provincial metropolis. In addition to locating the work in its historical and cultural context, this commentary investigates Apuleius' remarkable language and style. Full attention is given to the rich and complex intertextual relationship of the Florida to earlier Greek and Roman literature, as well as to the work's extensive links to Middle Platonism, the Second Sophistic, and the rest of the Apuleian corpus, particularly his philosophical works.

The author presumes that a coherent interpretation of a text results from a complex interaction between linguistic and extra-linguistic information. The study presents a unified account of the semantics of temporality which treats the varying grammatical factors (aspectual classes, tense, and discourse structure) in a systematic way.

The Greek text is given as appendix. The cross-cultural nature of these moral teachings is emphasized through extensive interaction with Biblical, Hellenistic Jewish, and Greco-Roman comparative materials.

    Inhalt: Die in dieser Arbeit angewandte Hermeneutik ist eine Hermeneutik vom Ende her, die die Resonanz sowie die Dissonanz zwischen dem Epilog und den vorderen Teilen des Hiobbuches betont. Im Zusammenhang von Theophanie und Epilog werden Tadel und Lob, Vergeltung und ihre Aufhebung, göttliche Transzendenz und Zugänglichkeit zusammengesehen. Die sehr verschiedenartigen Traditionen des vorangehenden Abschnitts werden nicht als konkurrierende Alternativen, sondern einander ergänzende Möglichkeiten gesehen, die Natur der Beziehung zwischen Gott und Mensch zu sehen und auf die Wirklichkeit von Chaos und Leiden zu antworten.

    Inhalt: A re-assessment of the theory that the Hebrew Bible contains references to Yahweh's battle with a dragon or the sea, with special reference to the Psalter.
    Inhalt: Die Studie hinterfragt die These, dass die Hebräische Bibel Anspielungen auf Jahwes Kampf mit dem Chaos enthält. An vielen Stellen werde das Motiv ungerechtfertigt herangezogen, wo eigentlich andere Bildmotive zu erkennen sind. Durch ein sorgfältiges diachronisches Modell, vor allem am Psalter entwickelt, stellt die Autorin Grundzüge der Entwicklung israelitischer Religion in ein neues Licht. Das Chaoskampfmotiv fehlte in der frühesten Periode, während Jahwe die Tötung des Drachens erst in einer monotheistischen Fassung des Motivs zugeschrieben wurde, die um 587 v.Chr. aufkam.
