    Content: It has been a century since the first publication of the Apokritikos extracts, which were written "by a Greek philosopher of the 3rd century" (Adolf von Harnack, 1911). One hundred years later, as part of the same series, there now follows a complete bilingual edition of the entire Apokritikos. Along with a German translation, this volume includes a newly reconstructed Greek text with critical commentary. The Apokritikos contains one of the three most sweeping anti-Christian polemics preserved from classical philosophy, together with Makarios’s refutation from the Christian side.

Der Apokritikos enthält eine der drei umfangreichsten anti-christlichen Streitschriften, die sich aus der antiken Philosophie erhalten haben, und des Makarios Widerlegung von christlicher Seite. Während die beiden anderen Werke des Kelsos und des Julian ebenso wie ihre Widerlegungen durch Origenes und Kyrill stets große Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zogen, ist v.a. die umfangreiche Verteidigung des Christentums durch Makarios Magnes bisher nur wenigen Fachleuten bekannt gewesen. Die vorliegende Ausgabe enthält textkritische und exegetische Apparate und eine hilfreiche Einführung in Text und Inhalt des Gesamtwerkes, dessen Datierung und philosophie- und theologiegeschichtliche Einordnung, wie etwa der Zusammenhang mit Porphyrios oder mit dem Konzil von Konstantinopel 381, Gegenstand kontroverser Debatten ist. Ein grundlegendes Werk für alle an der antiken Kritik am Neuen Testament, antiker Philosophie und Rhetorik Interessierte.
