Die Studie zeichnet nach, wie vielfältig der Cambridger Platonismus die europäische Aufklärung mitprägte und auf welche Weise anhand der Diskussion um den Topos der ,Welt' das Verhältnis von Theologie, Philosophie und Naturwissenschaft zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts neu bestimmt worden ist. Gezeigt wird, wie Ralph Cudworths True Intellectual System und dessen französische Übersetzung durch Jean Leclerc eine europaweite Debatte um die Leistungsfähigkeit der plastischen Natur auslösten, an der sich neben Pierre Bayle, Leibniz und Shaftesbury auch Cudworths Tochter, Lady Masham, beteiligte. Während Leibniz auf das Problem der Theodizee fokussierte und Shaftesbury die Diskussion um die Dimension des Schönen erweiterte, versuchte Lady Masham, den Cambridger Platonismus mit der Locke'schen Kritik an den angeborenen Ideen zu versöhnen.
