Der fünfte Band der Würzburger Bischofsreihe behandelt die Episkopate der Epoche vom Spätkonfessionalismus katholischer Provenienz bis zum Einsetzen erster Impulse der Aufklärung. Die vorgestellten fünf Pontifikate illustrieren den in diesem Zeitraum erreichten Höhepunkt absolutistischer Machtentfaltung. Insgesamt fand das Würzburger Staatswesen in dieser Periode zu festen Formen, die auch im weiteren 18. Jahrhundert erhalten bleiben sollten.
