Ebenso wie seine Epoche – die Spätantike – hat die Forschung ihn lange Zeit als eine bloße Vermittlungsinstanz zwischen Antike und christlichem Mittelalter betrachtet. Dass diese Einschätzung zu kurz greift und Boethius wie auch die Spätantike vielmehr in ihrer Eigenständigkeit zu würdigen sind, soll in dem Sammelband gezeigt werden.
