Der vorliegende Band stellt zunächst eine Reihe von Ansätzen und Verfahren dar, die sich mit der Analyse journalistischen Sprachgebrauchs beschäftigen. Breiten Raum nehmen dabei vor allem die linguistischen Untersuchungsschwerpunkte ein: Syntax und Wortschatz, rhetorisch-stilistische Aspekte, Rubriksprachen, textologische Analyse. Da die meisten Arbeiten auf sehr heterogenem Material basieren, stellt sich sodann die Frage, nach welchen Gliederungskriterien Korpora mit funktional vergleichbaren Texten zu gewinnen sind. Ausgehend von der Diskussion pressespezifischer Konstitutionsbedingungen werden mithilfe des Intentionalitätskonzepts fünf Textklassen unterschieden. Die anschließende Differenzierung von Textsorten ergibt sich aus der Berücksichtigung weiterer Merkmalsdimensionen (Makrostruktur, Kommunikationsmodalität, Zeitbezug, Textthema u.a.). Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt auf der Skizzierung verschiedener journalistischer Textsorten, wobei die betreffenden Kapitel für die Neuauflage durchweg neu geschrieben und erweitert wurden.
