Januar 1945 begann die Rote Armee ihre lang erwartete Grossoffensive gegen das nationalsozialistische Deutsche Reich. Obwohl längst keine Hoffnung auf einen Sieg mehr bestand und sie weit unterlegen war, leistete die Wehrmacht vielerorts verbissen Widerstand. Allein die Schlacht um die Hauptstadt Berlin dauerte gut zwei Wochen. Am 2. Mai hissten schliesslich Soldaten der Roten Armee die sowjetische Flagge über dem Reichstag. Der Historiker Peter Lieb erklärt, weshalb die Kämpfe in diesen letzten Monaten noch einmal so viele Opfer forderten, und veranschaulicht die gewaltige Vernichtungskraft des von Adolf Hitler ausgelösten Kriegs
