Long description: Staat und Gesellschaft können sich dem Anspruch, "Menschen als Gleiche zu behandeln", nur annähern, wenn Ungleichheiten erkannt und eingestanden werden: wenn "für jeden das gleiche Recht, als ungleich anerkannt zu werden, besteht" (Thomas Marshall). Erst die Anerkennung von Ungleichheit berücksichtigt die Unterschiede, die Individuen manches ermöglichen bzw. verwehren, so z. B. die gegebene physiologische Ausstattung, die aus der sozialen Herkunft erwachsenden Bildungschancen oder die jeweiligen Bedingungen der Erwerbsarbeit. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersucht Fischer, welche zentralen Bedingungen für ein Freiwilligenengagement überhaupt erfüllt werden müssen, damit es sich in seinen spezifischen Funktionen für Staat, Ökonomie, Zivilgesellschaft und Individuen verwirklichen kann. Gefragt wird schließlich, welche Bevölkerungsgruppen in welcher Hinsicht vom Freiwilligenengagement profitieren und welcher Modus den Zugang zu diesem als exklusiv erkannten, profitermöglichenden Bereich reguliert.
