Trotz äußerst schwacher Wirtschaftsentwicklung erlebt die grundsätzliche Kritik am Wirtschaftswachstum derzeit einen neuen Höhepunkt. Diese Kritik reicht freilich schon fast 150 Jahre zurück und erreichte 1934 im »Deutschen Sozialismus« Werner Sombarts einen ersten Höhepunkt. Da sich trotzdem an der Einstellung der Bevölkerung zur Wirtschaft nichts geändert hat, scheinen die Verhaltensannahmen der Kritiker nicht zuzutreffen. Die heutigen Autoren lassen es allerdings nicht bei der moralischen Verurteilung bewenden, sondern meinen, man müsse das Wirtschaftswachstum bekämpfen, um den Schadstoffausstoß zu reduzieren. Hier stellt sich jedoch die Frage, ob eine zielgerichtete Umweltpolitik nicht effektiver wäre, als das ständige Starren auf den Ausstoß.
