Maria Blei (1867–1943), Ehefrau des in Wien geborenen Schriftstellers, Herausgebers und Kulturvermittlers Franz Blei (1871–1942), begann nach der Geburt der gemeinsamen Tochter Maria Eva Sibylla (1897–1962), kurz Billy genannt, für diese ein Tagebuch zu schreiben. Mit drei Dutzend Fotografien angereichert, umspannt es die Jahre 1897 bis 1919, in der die kleine Familie in Zürich, München und Wien sowie in Philadelphia lebte, wo Maria Blei ein Studium der Zahnmedizin absolvierte. Was als Erinnerungsbuch für die Tochter gedacht war, geriet immer mehr zu einer Bekenntnis- und Rechtfertigungsschrift der Mutter. Maria Blei hielt darin die Kümmernisse einer modernen Frau fest, die gewillt war, aus den vorgegebenen Rollenbildern auszubrechen. Dadurch entstand ein wertvolles kulturgeschichtliches Lebenszeugnis der Umbruchphase um 1900. Zugleich ist das Tagebuch ein zentrales biographisches Dokument der Familie Blei, das in seiner ungeschliffenen Spontaneität einen aufschlussreichen Kontrapunkt zu Franz Bleis souveräner Autobiographie „Erzählung eines Lebens“ aus dem Jahr 1930 bildet.
