Er hatte berühmte Förderer (Bizet, Thomas) und Schüler (Chausson, Hahn, Pierné, Koechlin), war Rom-Preisträger und als Komponist sehr produktiv, in seiner Zeit erfolgreich und doch weiss man kaum etwas über ihn. Der junge österreichische Musikforscher Schmidl hat den 100. Todestag 2012 zum Anlass genommen, die 1. Biografie des Komponisten in deutscher Sprache vorzulegen. Er zeichnet den Werdegang Massenets vor dem Hintergrund seiner Zeit nach, rückt falsche Sichtweisen zurecht und räumt gängige Klischees aus ("Frauenkomponist", Vielschreiber). Massenet traf mit seinen Kompositionen den Nerv der Zeit: Das Fin de Siècle in Frankreich mit seinem aufkommenden Nationalismus und seiner gepflegten Gefühlskultur sucht er mit seiner eigenen Ästhetik einzufangen (das Adjektiv "massenetique" entstand damals), wobei ihm die Gratwanderung zwischen Gefälligkeit und stupender Kompositionstechnik fast immer gelang.
