In seinem neuen Roman erzählt der Erfolgsautor brasilianischer Herkunft (Jahrgang 1947) die alttestamentarische Geschichte des Propheten Elia, der Israel verlassen und ins Exil nach Phoenizien gehen muß, weil er seinem einzigen Gott nicht abschwören will, wie es die Heidenprinzessin Isebel von ihm verlangte. Im phoenizischen Akbar wird er zum Sündenbock für alles Unheil gestempelt, das das Land ereilt. Elia kämpft ums Überleben für sich, die Liebe zu seiner Wirtin, die Stadt Akbar. Damit das Exil zur Heimat werden kann, muß er sich mehrfach Gottes schweren Prüfungen stellen und mit und gegen ihn um seine Selbstbestimmung ringen. Wie in seinem bekanntesten Roman "Der Alchimist" (BA 4/97) ist die Handlung als Gleichnis zu verstehen, dienen die Figuren als bloße Projektionsfläche für seine Lebensweisheiten nach Art eines Lao Tse, Saint-Exupéry, Sloterdijk. Gelungener als "Am Ufer des Rio Piedra saß ich und weinte" (BA 2/98), breit empfohlen.
