Problematisch ist eine neuzeitliche Auslegungstradition, die das Opfer zum Täter umdeutet und Stephanus selbst die Schuld an seinem gewaltsamen Tod zuschreibt. Klaus Haacker unterstreicht demgegenüber die psychologische und historische Plausibilität des lukanischen Berichts von der Rolle der 'falschen Zeugen'. Insgesamt ist ein Band entstanden, der die Dramatik der biblischen Stephanusgeschichte herausarbeitet und prägnante Beispiele ihrer Wirkungsgeschichte bis ins 20. Jahrhundert Revue passieren lässt.
