Die Autorin veröffentlichte in der gleichen Reihe bereits "Alexander der Große und die Grenzen der Welt" (BA 4/07). Sie verbindet eine fiktive Geschichte um die junge sächsische Sängerin Siggilind mit eingeschobenen Hintergrundinformationen zur Zeit. Die Sachkapitel u.a. zu Karls Herrschaftssystem, zum Alltag in der karolingischen Zeit und zu Karls renommierten Beratern überzeugen uneingeschränkt. Bei den Illustrationen (schwarz-weiß!) handelt es sich meist um Fotos etwa des fränkischen Langschwerts oder um Reproduktionen historischer Gemälde. Weniger überzeugend ist der fiktionale Teil, da zwar Siggilind Karls Aachener Herrschaftssitz und die dort Lebenden genauer kennenlernt, aber die Erzählung wenig spannend ist. Aufgelockert wird dieser Teil durch zahlreiche comicartige Zeichnungen. Kaiser ist ein verständlich geschriebener Band gelungen, der ein recht umfassendes Bild von Karls Persönlichkeit, seinem Reich und den Lebensumständen der Bewohner gibt. Nicht zuletzt, weil es kein vergleichbares Buch für Kinder und Jugendliche gibt, zur Anschaffung empfohlen, besonders auch für Schulbüchereien.
