Eine monographische Studie über das Vernichtungslager Auschwitz fehlt bis heute, eine Lücke, die dieser schmale Band sicher nicht schließen kann. Es gelingt der Autorin (Historikerin; Ruhr-Universität Bochum) aber, die Geschichte des Lagers Auschwitz in seinen wichtigsten Zusammenhängen, insbesondere die Verknüpfung von Vernichtung, nationalsozialistischer "Lebensraumeroberung" und industrieller Ausbeutungsinteressen, darzustellen. Über die einzelnen Phasen der Vernichtungspolitik hinaus, lenkt Steinbacher den Blick auf die 700-jährige Geschichte der von jüdischen Traditionen geprägten Stadt Auschwitz, auf die öffentliche Nachkriegs-Auseinandersetzung mit dem Massenmord in dem Auschwitz-Prozessen Polens und Deutschlands und auf die juristischen Konflikte um die "Auschwitz-Lüge". Eine überaus solide, den aktuellen Forschungsstand aufnehmende Arbeit, die neben R. J. van Pelts "Auschwitz" (vgl. BA 1/01) auch kleineren Bibliotheken als kenntnisreicher, komprimiert dargebotener Überblick empfohlen wird. (1 S)
