Das Land auf dem "Dach der Welt" im Zentrum Asiens war lange Zeit durchaus nicht isoliert, sondern starken Einflüssen seiner mächtigen Nachbarn, der Mongolen, Chinesen, Inder und Briten, ausgesetzt und immer wieder auch in interne und äußere Machtkämpfe verwickelt.
