Obwohl die Staaten des Kaukasus in letzter Zeit ein wenig aus den Schlagzeilen verschwunden sind, ist doch keines der zahlreichen Probleme dort gelöst; jederzeit könnte es wieder zu einer Eskalation der Gewalt kommen. Diese Nahtstelle zwischen Orient und Okzident, Christentum und Islam wird noch lange Spielball der Interessen der Großmächte bleiben, noch dazu, weil es um knapper werdende Ressourcen wie Öl geht. Die von namhaften Wissenschaftlern (z.B. Uwe Halbach, Tessa Hofmann, Udo Steinbach) geschriebenen Beiträge dieser regionalpolitischen Analyse stellen zunächst die einzelnen Staaten und Gebiete mit ihrer jeweiligen Geografie, Geschichte und Kultur vor. Anschließend werden die wichtigsten Konflikte näher beleuchtet und schließlich länderübergreifende kulturelle Phänomene betrachtet. Das Buch bietet überaus kompetente und verständlich gestaltete Informationen. Ältere Literatur wie Wolfgang Günter Lerch "Der Kaukasus" (BA 2/01) kann ersetzt werden.
