Großheim rekonstruiert die Lebensgeschichte des bekanntesten Vietnamesen des 20. Jahrhunderts, des Nationalhelden Ho Chi Minh (1890-1969), dessen Gestalt in seiner Heimat immer noch allgegenwärtig ist. Geschildert werden Kindheit und Jugend in Zentralvietnam, die Jahre im Ausland (Paris, Kanton, Hongkong und Moskau), der Kampf um nationale Unabhängigkeit sowie Hos Rolle beim Aufbau des sozialistischen Staates und während des Vietnamkriegs (vgl. R. Steininger: "Der Vietnamkrieg", BA 2/05). Deutlich wird, dass Ho weder dem in Vietnam selbst gepflegten Bild des nationalistischen Heiligen noch der lange von den Amerikanern verbreiteten Vorstellung eines machiavellistischen Apparatschiks in Diensten der Komintern entsprach. Lange lebte er isoliert im Ausland. Auch in den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren war er nicht so mächtig, wie im Westen geglaubt wurde, und in den letzten Lebensjahren übernahm er nur zeremonielle Funktionen. In ideologischen Fragen war er häufig pragmatischer als gemeinhin angenommen. Gegen seinen letzten Willen begann nach seinem Tode ein Personenkult, u.a. mit dem Bau eines Mausoleums. (1 S)
