Uns Heutigen ist das Mittelalter oft fern, unser Verständnis von ihm schemenhaft. Einen Überblick gibt L. Sturlese (geboren 1948; Professor in Lecce, Italien; Philosophiehistoriker, Philologe und Herausgeber des lateinischen Werkes Meister Eckharts; international tätiger und renommierter Philosoph). Ein Experiment, so der Autor - ein gelungenes, meint der Rezensent -, einzelne theoretische Bemühungen der Zeit zwischen den Jahren 500 bis 1450 rein historisch zu beschreiben und nicht, wie so häufig, rückwirkend mit Blick auf die Bedeutung einiger weniger Denkansätze auswählend. Sein Blick gilt der Vielfalt der Stätten und Sprachen, an denen Philosophie entwickelt, betrieben und tradiert wurde, und verzichtet darauf, auf wenige massgebliche Denker und grosse Themen zu reduzieren. Von nie zuvor gehörten Namen ist zu lesen. Europäisches Denken verdankt sich persischer, arabischer und islamischer Kultur. Dass der Islam ein Teil europäischer Kulturgeschichte ist, wird sehr deutlich. (2)
