In diesem Essay beschäftigt sich die Historikerin mit dem Erstarken des Nationalismus' unter Donald Trump. Dabei folgt sie einer doppelten Leitthese: Zum einen sei die Entwicklung jeder Nation und der USA im Besonderen ambivalent verlaufen, weil "Nation" sowohl Errungenschaften wie Rechtsstaatlichkeit und Teilhabe als auch tiefe Verwerfungen wie Landraub und Gewalt gegen Minderheiten inkludiert. Zum anderen hätten stets reaktionäre Kräfte die Nation für sich vereinnahmt. Lepore macht deutlich, dass die von Rechten propagierte Nation im doppelten Wortsinne "wertlos" ist, weil sie allein auf Abgrenzung ("America first!") setzt. Dass zuvörderst Menschen- und Bürgerrechte einer Nation Substanz verleihen, müssten links-liberale Patrioten wesentlich stärker betonen, um die hohlen Phrasen der neuen Rechten zu entlarven. - Sehr präzise und sprachlich exzellente Analyse.
