Meist zweiseitige Illustrationen (häufig Schnitte) und Fotos zeigen bekannte Bauwerke für verschiedenste Zwecke vom alten Ägypten bis heute. Daneben stehen Seiten zu einzelnen Gebäudetypen. Alles ist thematisch, nicht chronologisch gereiht, wobei die Auswahl aus globaler, speziell anglo-amerikanischer Sicht erfolgte. Die Bilder dienen als Eye-catcher und werden von kurzen, sachlichen Texten flankiert. Der Stil ähnelt dem der Reihe "Das Innere der Dinge", z.B. in "Kühne Konstruktionen" (BA 11/97). Ein willkommener Titel mit großer inhaltlicher Breite, der Interesse an Architektur wecken kann. Der globalen Sichtweise fallen allerdings die eurozentrierten Epochebegriffe zum Opfer. An der Grenze zwischen 4.3 und 6.8. - Breit einsetzbar. Auch für Schulbibliotheken. (Martin Paulini)
