Sein Vater, wie er als Jude geboren, hatte sich und seine Söhne protestantisch taufen lassen und ein Bankgeschäft gegründet; es wurde zu einem der führenden Bankhäuser Berlins. Ab 1840 berichtete Eduard Magnus in 150 erhaltenen Briefen an Gustav Adolf Schöll - Archäologe, Philologe und Nachfolger Goethes in dessen Ämtern - über den Berliner Kunstbetrieb.
