Die Arbeit ermittelt die im Werk Tolstojs entwickelte Strategie zur Transformation des Todes im Sinne einer Gleichwertigkeit von Sein und Nicht-Sein. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei jenen Figuren, deren Selbstwerdung sich in der Berührung mit fremdem oder eigenem Sterben vollzieht. Eine Analyse der Weltverhältnisse der Figuren erlaubt Rückschlüsse auf gelingende und ebenso scheiternde Prozesse solcher Selbstwerdung. Als Angelegenheit eines bewussten Glaubens wird der Tod schließlich zu einem Element göttlicher Immanenz im Menschen. In der Agape wird die als Schuld verfügbar gemachte Angst vor dem Tod zu einem die diesseitige Auferstehung sichernden Prinzip des Daseins. Den Prozess der Eingliederung in eine Tod und Auferstehung einschließende Weltordnung gestaltet Tolstoj dabei als Wiederherstellung der ursprünglichsten Domestikation des Menschen.
