Kurz vor ihrem Freitod entschließt sich Rosalind auf selbst besprochenen Cassetten mit ihrer Familiengeschichte zu erklären, wie ihre geliebte Imogen, die blinde Enkelin ihrer Cousine, ihr Augenlicht verloren hat. Zugleich bittet Rosalind in ihrem Testamtent ihre Nichte Gill, Imogen ausfindig zu machen und ihr die Cassetten zu übergeben. Der Roman des britischen Autors (zuletzt BA 5/06) enthält 2 Ebenen: Die Rahmengeschichte mit Gill und ihren beiden Töchtern und den Hauptteil, den Aufnahmetext der Cassetten, die Rosalind, ausgehend von Bildbeschreibungen alter Fotos, besprochen hat - eine originelle Erzählform, die der Autor (s. zuletzt BA 5/06) gewählt hat. Im Wesentlichen geht es in diesem fesselnden Roman um die Beziehungen von Frauen untereinander, als Kinder und als Erwachsene, bis in die 3. Generation zurück: Verwandte und Freundinnen, Geliebte und Lebenspartnerinnen, aber vor allem Mütter und Töchter. So steht auch nicht die lesbische Liebe Rosalinds im Vordergrund, sondern die Auswirkungen, die fehlende Mutterliebe über Generationen hinweg hat. Breit zu empfehlen.
