Das vom Kunsthistoriker Georg Dehio 1905 gegründete Handbuch ist bis heute - mittlerweile vollkommen neubearbeitet - ein verläßliches topographisches Denkmäler-Handbuch. Es informiert kompakt, aber umfassend über alle bedeutenden Bauwerke. Mit dem Erscheinen des Bandes Sachsen-Anhalt I, der den Regierungsbezirk Magdeburg nach der heutigen Verwaltungseinteilung geordnet umfaßt, ist die Neubearbeitung des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt abgeschlossen. Der Band umfaßt neben der Landeshauptstadt Magdeburg, die Magdeburger Börde, den sachsen-anhaltinischen Teil von Harz und Vorharz, den Kreis Schönebeck sowie den südlichen Teil des mittelalterlichen Backsteinbaus in Norddeutschland in der Altmark und dem Jerichower Land. Neben dem als Weltkulturerbe eingetragenen Quedlinburg finden die bedeutenden Fachwerkstädte Wernigerode und Osterwieck ebenso Würdigungen wie die bedeutsamen mittelalterlichen Hansestädte Salzwedel, Stendal, Gardelegen und Tangermünde. Eingehende Betrachtung erfährt die Baugeschichte Magdeburgs von ihren Anfängen bis hin zu ihrer Funktion als innovatives Zentrum der Ideen des modernen Wohn- und Siedlungsbaus im Deutschland der 1920er Jahren sowie zu ihrem Wiederaufbau nach 1945. Die Städte und Dörfer zwischen Wernigerode und Salzwedel im Westen, Havelberg, Genthin und Schönebeck im Osten werden mit ihren wichtigsten Denkmälern bis in das 20. Jahrhundert vorgestellt.
