Der Begriff »Menschenwürde« ist in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten weltweit zu einem Brennpunkt der bioethischen Debatte geworden. Angestoßen durch den rasanten Fortschritt der medizinischen Forschung und die sich daraus ergebenden Probleme hat sich eine umfangreiche gesellschaftliche Kontroverse über die moralische Akzeptabilität vieler neuartiger medizinischer Technologien entwickelt. Dieser Diskussion widmet sich das interdisziplinäre Handbuch, das im Rahmen einer interdisziplinär und international zusammengesetzten Forschungsgruppe am Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Forschung (ZIF) in Bielefeld zu dem Thema »Herausforderungen für Menschenwürde und Menschenbild durch neuere Entwicklungen der Medizintechnik« erarbeitet worden ist. In Teil A. wird zunächst eine theoretische Grundlegung des Menschenwürdebegriffs aus den Perspektiven unterschiedlicher Disziplinen entwickelt. Teil B. zeigt die Möglichkeiten der Anwendung des Menschenwürdebegriffs auf die gleichsam klassischen Fragen der Medizinethik und des Medizinrechts, einschließlich seiner Bezüge zur medizinischen Praxis. Teil C. erweitert die Perspektive um neuere Entwicklungen des medizintechnischen Fortschritts und die hiermit zusammenhängenden möglichen Anwendungsbereiche des Menschenwürdegedankens.
