Am 1. Juni 1811 wurde das "Allgemeine Bürgerliche Gesetzbuch" (ABGB) kundgemacht und trat am 1. Januar 1812 in Kraft. Damit erhielt die Habsburgermonarchie, zeitweise unter Einschluss Ungarns, ein einheitliches Privatrecht. Das ABGB zeichnete sich in seiner ursprünglichen Fassung durch eine vernunftrechtliche und daher logische Konstruktion sowie durch eine prägnante und dennoch volkstümliche Sprache aus. Dem multinationalen Charakter Österreich-Ungarns wurde es durch eine Vielzahl von Übersetzungen gerecht. Die Darstellung seiner Geltung außerhalb der heutigen österreichischen Staatsgrenzen - in Liechtenstein, Ungarn, der Woiwodina, Kroatien-Slawonien, Polen, Tschechoslowakei und Italien - veranschaulicht ebenso wie die Erläuterung seines Einflusses auf Deutschland, die Schweiz und Serbien die maßgebliche Bedeutung des ABGB für die europäische Gesetzgebungsgeschichte.
