Im Frühjahr 2007 sucht Bruni Prasske (zuletzt BA 7/07) in Saigon einen Dolmetscher und lernt den Rollstuhlfahrer Nguyen Phong Dien kennen, der perfekt Deutsch spricht. Im Herbst kehrt sie zurück, um seine Lebensgeschichte aufzuschreiben und mit ihm Vietnam zu bereisen. Dien wurde 1968 als Fünfjähriger während des Vietnamkriegs von einem Granatsplitter im Rücken getroffen und ist seitdem querschnittgelähmt. Auf Initiative von Terre des hommes wird er mit anderen verletzten Kindern nach Deutschland zur Rehabilitation ausgeflogen. Die Jahre von 1969 bis 1974 zählt er heute noch zur glücklichsten Zeit seines Lebens. 1974 muss er zurück nach Vietnam, lebt jahrelang unter katastrophalen Bedingungen auf dem Land bei seiner Familie, flüchtet nach Saigon und arbeitet dort als Uhrmacher. Ebenso lesenswert wie Diens Erinnerungen sind die gemeinsamen Reiseerlebnisse in Saigon, im Mekongdelta, an Traumstränden und in ländlichen Gegenden - unterwegs mit Dreiradmoped und Rollstuhl im heutigen Vietnam, das Behinderte als "kaputte Maschinen" und Strafe der Götter ausgrenzt.
