Nach Gesprächen mit Rumäniendeutschen , die 1945 in sowjetische Zwangsarbeitslager deportiert worden waren, entstand die bewegende Geschichte um den 17-jährigen Leo und ein Dutzend Dorfbewohner aus Siebenbürgen - aufgeschrieben nicht im Solschenizyn-Stil, sondern als berührender Monolog voller surrealer Traum- und Poesiesequenzen mit altersphilosophischen Weisheiten eines nach jahrelanger Haft Freigekommenen. Er bleibt bis ins hohe Alter vom entsetzlichen Leiden im Gulag geprägt - von Hunger, Schufterei, Kälte, Gewalt, von Krankheiten und Sterben, Misstrauen und Hass und Heimweh. Und fühlt sich jetzt unter den "Heimatsatten" fremd und gemieden, wegen der traumatischen Erinnerungen und auch seiner Homosexualität. "Wir waren alle anders als wir sind."
