Im Titelbeitrag selbst, seiner "Münchner Rede zur Poesie", vermisst Wagner auf anregende Weise den Raum der Lyrik. Neben den bedeutenden Lyrikern tritt nun ein Prosaist von Graden, ausgestattet mit stupender Belesenheit und großem Kenntnisreichtum - ein poeta doctus, bei dem, was immer er an Themen verhandelt, Tiefgründigkeit und spielerische Leichtigkeit keinen Widerspruch darstellen. Ob Wagner porträtiert oder erzählt, interpretiert oder in den unerschöpflichen Fundus seiner Anekdoten greift: kaum ein jüngerer Autor verfügt über einen so verführerischen, poetischen Stil wie dieser Tausendsassa, dessen Muse in Spendierhosen daherkommt.
