Mit dem Kaleidoskop aus biografischen Anekdoten, Recherchen in der Fleischindustrie und einer Fülle statistischer Belege reitet der Autor eine leidenschaftliche Attacke gegen das System der Massentierhaltung, macht auf Bedeutung und Folgen eines ungehemmten Fleischkonsums aufmerksam und skizziert Möglichkeiten eines Wandels. Dabei sind es weniger die (nicht unbedingt neuen) Fakten, auch nicht seine Sympathien für den Vegetarismus, die beeindrucken, sondern Foer argumentiert aus der Perspektive eines Fleischessers, der nicht mehr verdrängen will, dass die Tiere, die er isst, qualvoll sterben, nachdem sie schon qualvoll gelebt haben. Doch ist das Buch keine Kampfschrift, sondern ein Plädoyer für eine verantwortungsbewusste Ernährung: "Ich würde ... niemandem zum Vorwurf machen, Würste zu essen, ich finde nur, man muss das nicht dauernd tun". - In den USA gilt Foer als Galionsfigur der bewussten Besseresser; hierzulande belegt das Buch bereits die Sellerlisten.
