Süchtig nach Spaß sind hier ziemlich viele. Der kommt durch Erfolg und/oder Drogen zustande. Die Schauplätze dieses opulenten Werkes sind eine Tennisakademie und eine nahe Drogenentzugsklinik. Hal, Student der Akademie, seine älteren Brüder, der behinderte Mario und Orin, die Mutter Avril sowie der Vater James, dessen Selbstmord per Mikrowelle minutiös geschildert wird, sind Hauptakteure. Aber der Autor geht mit allem so sehr ins Detail, dass die Wissbegier des Lesers eher gelähmt wird. Anschauliche Szenen, beispielsweise des Erlebens eines Drogenentzugs, die Schilderungen der Gruppentreffen der Anonymen Alkoholiker, in denen schwer beschädigte Schicksale zu Wort kommen, stehen dem gegenüber. Unverständliche Abkürzungen, ungewöhnlichste Fremdwörter in derartiger Häufigkeit, Neologismen, endlose Sätze ergeben nicht nur einen reichen Fundus für literaturwissenschaftliche Seminare, sondern auch für den passionierten Leser und Wallace-Fan (s. auch "In alter Vertrautheit", ID 21/08).
