1944: Täglich trägt Johann, 17, die Post im kleinen ostböhmischen Wolfentann aus. Seitdem er an der Front seine linke Hand verloren hat, arbeitet er als Briefträger in seinem Heimatdorf, in dem fast nur noch Frauen, Greise und Kinder leben. Jeder im Dorf kennt ihn, denn er bringt die Nachrichten von den fernen Vätern, Söhnen, Brüdern und kennt die Schicksale der Dorfbewohner. Auf ihrer Durchreise kommt die gleichaltrige Irmela aus Linz ins Dorf und kann bei Johann übernachten. Die beiden kommen sich näher, aber Irmela muss zurück zu den Eltern. Sie machen aus, sich nach dem Krieg wieder zu sehen. Doch seine Bekanntschaft zur verwirrten alten Försterswitwe wird Johann bei Kriegsende zum Verhängnis. - Die Autorin hat es sich als eine (der letzten) Zeitzeugen des 2. Weltkrieges zur Aufgabe gemacht, auf die unmenschlichen Zustände von Krieg hinzuweisen, die vielen Menschen die Hoffnung auf Lebensglück zerstört haben.
