Die Entstehung von Claras Tagebüchern ist ungewöhnlich, da sie anfangs stellvertretend vom Vater, dem Klavierpädagogen Friedrich Wieck, geführt werden. Erst die Achtzehnjährige kann sich frei von väterlicher Zensur äußern. Da hat sich längst die Liebesbeziehung zu Robert Schumann entwickelt, die nach schweren Konflikten mit Wieck 1840 zur Hochzeit und damit zum glücklichen Ausklang der Tagebuch-Berichte führt. Die Aufzeichnungen sind biographisch-kulturhistorisch vielschichtig und anregend. Prägnant und oft amüsant werden insbesondere die ausgedehnten Konzertreisen der jungen Pianistin geschildert: Städte, Konzertsäle, Instrumente, Kollegen, Konkurrenten und natürlich Claras Erfolge bilden ein höchst reizvolles historisches Panorama. Herausgeber sind der Schumann-Forscher Gerd Nauhaus (Zwickau), der bereits Schumanns Tage- und Haushaltbücher edierte, und die renommierte Clara-Schumann-Biographin Nancy B. Reich (New York).
