Mit dem Konzept der Menschenwürde antwortet ein professionalisiertes Nachdenken auf die Läsionen, die Menschen durch ihresgleichen erfahren. Aufgabe der Philosophie menschlicher Würde ist es, den Gedanken diesseits allen appellativen Gebrauchs argumentativ zu begründen und gegen skeptische Einwände zu verteidigen. In Kants praktischer Philosophie dient er intern, moralphilosophisch als Richtschnur moralischen Handelns und seiner Beurteilung und extern, ontologisch als Grenze oder Möglichkeitsbedingung menschlicher Selbstverständigung überhaupt. Soll Würde in letzterem Sinn begründbar sein, muss sich diese Grenze regressfrei selbst noch einmal diskursiv erschließen lassen. Das geschieht in einem "Grenzdiskurs", der sich selbst auf der Grenze hält, über die er spricht - in notwendig, metaphorischer Rede, die auf ihre regulative Funktion hin ausgelegt wird. Menschenwürde ist kein konstitutiver, theoretisches Wissen erweiternder Begriff, sondern ein praktisch regulativer Begriff menschlicher Selbstverständigung. Über der Frage, wie sich seine Inanspruchnahme rechtfertigen lässt (quaestio juris), scheiden sich die Geister und die Ontologien.
