Er war einer seiner schärfsten Kritiker, und doch soll Hitler sich bei Veranstaltungen manchmal geweigert haben, mit seiner Rede zu beginnen, bevor er nicht eingetroffen war: Konrad Heiden. Als Mitarbeiter der angesehenen «Frankfurter Zeitung» gehörte er zu den ersten Publizisten, die den Aufstieg der Nazis kritisch begleiteten. Auf seiner zweibändigen Hitler-Biographie, die 1936/37 in der Schweiz herauskam, bauten fast alle späteren Lebensbeschreibungen des Diktators auf. Und doch ist Heiden heute nahezu vergessen. Stefan Aust porträtiert diesen faszinierenden Mann und lässt aus seiner Perspektive Hitlers Aufstieg und Herrschaft lebendig werden. Heiden, Sozialdemokrat jüdischer Herkunft, hatte sich bereits während seines Studiums in München Anfang der zwanziger Jahre gegen den Nationalsozialismus engagiert. «Marsch ohne Ziel, Taumel ohne Rausch, Glauben ohne Gott und selbst in seinem Blutdurst ohne Genuß» – so charakterisierte er die Bewegung in einem Buch, das Ende 1932 im Rowohlt Verlag herauskam. Im März 1933 zur Flucht gezwungen, setzte Heiden seinen Kampf gegen das Regime unter Lebensgefahr fort. In den USA galt er als führender Experte für das NS-Regime und dessen «Staatsfeind Nr. 1». 1966 starb er in New York. Es ist höchste Zeit, sich dieses Hitler-Gegners der allerersten Stunde wieder zu erinnern. „Stefan Aust hat Konrad Heiden ein gebührendes Denkmal gesetzt; und gerade in einer Zeit, in der die von Heiden beobachtete Mischung aus Nationalismus und bewusster Realitätsverweigerung wieder Blüten treibt, ist dieses Buch wertvoller denn je. Einen Mangel weist der Band auf; der ist allerdings umso ärgerlicher: Zwar hat Aust eine Fülle von Zitaten aus Heidens Schriften zusammengetragen. Doch nur in den seltensten Fällen wird klar, wann genau Heiden die eine oder andere Beobachtung veröffentlicht hat. Es wäre aber aufschlussreich zu wissen, was man zu welcher Zeit in Deutschland davon hätte lesen können. Auch ein Anmerkungsapparat stünde dem Buch gut an; schließlich hat Aust verdienstvolle Pionierarbeit geleistet. Für das Fachpublikum hätte diese Biographie dann noch einmal deutlich mehr Wert“ (deutschlandfunk.de)
