Das vorliegende Buch zu Erich Frieds Lyrik folgt keiner strengen Chronologie, die sich am Lebenslauf des Dichters orientiert. Stattdessen wird den gegensätzlichen Motiven der Liebe und des Terrors nachgegangen, die das lyrische Schreiben Erich Frieds maßgeblich prägen. Aus der Spannung und den Gegensätzen, aber auch aus der Wechselwirkung der beiden Phänomene entsteht bei Fried Poesie. Die Arbeit wertet neue Aspekte zu diesen beiden wichtigsten Themenkomplexen in den Lyrikbänden aus, die Fried von 1944 bis 1988 veröffentlicht hat. Dabei wird gezeigt, dass die Inkommensurabilität der beiden Begriffe Liebe und Terror nur eine scheinbare ist. So wird Frieds Lyrik nicht ausschließlich in ihrem politischen Kontext oder umgekehrt nur in Bezug auf ihre Liebesthematik analysiert, sondern im Zeichen der Reziprozität beider Themen. Eben jene Gleichzeitigkeit ist das Charakteristikum der Friedschen Poetik.
