Es stellt die zentralen Argumente vor, mit denen der Relativismus in unterschiedlichen Theorietraditionen gerechtfertigt wurde, und diskutiert kritisch deren Überzeugungskraft. Damit liegt erstmals eine systematische Untersuchung der unterschiedlichen Formen vor, in denen der Interpretationsrelativismus in der Literaturwissenschaft auftritt, sowie der Gründe, die für ihn angeführt wurden.
