Der zweite Band des Katalogs der hochmittelalterlichen Kirchen in Rom ist der päpstlichen Kathedrale S. Giovanni in Laterano gewidmet, der von Konstantin begründeten ersten christlichen Basilika. Erstmals entsteht anhand der Schrift- und Bildquellen eine Vorstellung vom mittelalterlichen Äußeren und Inneren des im Barock völlig umkleideten und im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert weiter veränderten Bauwerks. Rekonstruktionen der untergegangenen Fassade, der Apsis des 13. Jahrhunderts und des Ziboriums vom Magdalenenaltar sowie Untersuchungen über die mittelalterlichen Gräber und den erhaltenen Prachtkreuzgang bereichern das Werk. Im Kontext der kirchlichen Reformbewegung und in Konkurrenz zu der Basilika von St. Peter entwickelt der Lateranklerus seit dem 11. Jahrhundert ein legendenhinterfüttertes ideologisches Selbstbild, das sich sowohl in den Beharrungstendenzen, die in Bau und Ausstattung deutlich werden, als auch in den bedeutenden Erneuerungen des 13. und 14. Jahrhunderts manifestiert.
