Es war das letzte große Theaterereignis der DDR - Heiner Müllers siebeneinhalbstündige Hamlet-Inszenierung am Deutschen Theater. Die Proben begannen im August 1989, Müller legte das Stück als Drama eines jungen Mannes an, der als Intellektueller im Riß zwischen zwei Epochen steht und darin untergeht. Der Filmemacher Christoph Rüter dokumentierte die Proben. Doch dann gerät die Zeit buchstäblich aus den Fugen, die Geschichte bricht in den Theaterraum herein. Anstatt zu proben, führt man politische Diskussionen, Polizeisirenen und Hubschrauber werden zum Tonteppich der Aufführung, Müller und sein Hauptdarsteller Ulrich Mühe sprechen am 4. November bei der großen Kundgebung auf dem Alexanderplatz. Rüters Film zeigt hautnah, wie zwei der größten Theaterpersönlichkeiten der DDR die Wende erlebten.
