"Jüdische Mystik" definiert der Herausgeber als "eine Einstellung zur Realität sowie eine Art, das religiöse Leben des Judentums zu verstehen, zu strukturieren und zu bereichern", die daher nicht außerhalb der religiösen Praxis des Judentums ausgeübt werden kann. Er gliederte das Buch nach den 5 zentralen Ideen der jüdischen Mystik, die er anhand von klassischen hebräischen und aramäischen Texten - in Übersetzung - erläutert. Die ausgesuchten Quellen repräsentieren verschiedene mystische Traditionen des Judentums, angefangen von der biblischen Zeit über die spanische Kabbala im 13. Jahrhundert, die Zeit des Chassidismus im 18. Jahrhundert in Polen bis hin zur Gegenwart. Kushners Anliegen war es dabei, nicht nur über die mystische Tradition des Judentums zu informieren, sondern die Möglichkeit zu geben, aktuelle Bezüge herzustellen und ein Verzeichnis zeitgenössischer religiöser Realität zu entwickeln. Kushners Buch, das aus einem Einführungsseminar für das Rabbinatsstudium entstand, ist eine anschauliche und interessante Lektüre, ein gewisses Grundwissen über das Judentum vorausgesetzt. (3)
