Jahrhunderts wird die (west-)deutsche Nachkriegsliteratur meist als ein Wieder-Anknüpfen an die US-amerikanische und westeuropäische Literatur der Moderne verstanden, in bewusster Abgrenzung zur Literatur des Exils und der "inneren Emigration". Mit dieser Sicht, so die zentrale These des Marburger Hochschul-Germanisten, geriet die Literatur des "magischen Realismus" in Vergessenheit, die zwischen 1930 und 1960 einen bedeutenden Strang der deutschen Literaturgeschichte repräsentiert. An Autoren wie Günter Eich, Peter Huchel, Horst Lange oder Elisabeth Langgässer kann der Autor nachweisen, wie hier eine Formensprache gefunden wurde, die den Realismus der "Neuen Sachlichkeit" der 1920er-Jahre überwand, ohne hinter die literarische Moderne zurückzufallen. Eine spannende Entdeckungsreise in ein fast vergessenes Kapitel deutscher Literaturgeschichte, deren Leserkreis sich allerdings durch das akademisch anspruchsvolle Argumentationsniveau leider auf Studierende der Germanistik und Deutschlehrer begrenzt.
