Die Idee des Religionskrieges gewann erst in zeitgenössischen, politischen Debatten an Bedeutung. Frankreich und die Kriege Ludwigs XIV. nahmen eine entscheidende Rolle in der Religionskriegsdebatte ein, die ohne die Person und die Politik des französischen Königs undenkbar erschien. Das Buch arbeitet heraus, wie ein Diskurs, ein Geschichtsbild und eine Epocheneinteilung des Phänomens entstanden sind. Zu diesem Zweck betrachtet es drei zentrale konfessionelle Konfliktherde, die für die Religionskriegsdebatte entscheidend sind: Frankreich, England und das Heilige Römische Reich. Die Debatte gewann schließlich durch die Wahrnehmung der beiden letzten grossen Kriege Ludwigs XIV. eine gesamteuropäische Dimension.
