Gustav Schmoller (1838–1917) prägte die Sozialwissenschaften im Deutschen Kaiserreich wie kaum ein anderer. Als einer der Hauptvertreter der »Historischen Schule« der deutschen Nationalökonomie zählte der spätere Vorsitzende des Vereins für Socialpolitik zu den führenden »Kathedersozialisten«, die entschieden für eine sozialstaatliche Agenda eintraten. Den Erfolgen des liberalkonservativen Vertreters politischer Bürgerlichkeit entsprach eine akademische Laufbahn, die ihm bereits in jungen Jahren Einfluss auf das sozialwissenschaftliche Science Building im 19. Jahrhundert verschaffte. Jens Herold zeichnet in der ersten wissenschaftlichen Biografie Schmollers dessen Werdegang und Wirken bis zu seiner Ankunft in Berlin 1881/82 nach.
