Das vorliegende Buch ist einigen Ergebnissen und Methoden der geometrischen Funktionentheorie gewidmet: Holomorphe Funktionen werden also als spezielle Abbildungen ebener Gebiete angesehen und unter diesem Blickwinkel untersucht. Die Stoffauswahl ist (außer durch den persönlichen Geschmack der Autoren) durch folgende Überlegungen bestimmt: 1. Da Gebiete durch ihren Rand gegeben werden, ist das Randverhalten konformer Abbildungen ein Hauptthema der Darstellung. Es wird in Kapitel VI bei reell-analytisch berandeten einfach zusammenhängenden Gebieten untersucht; die hier erzielten Ergebnisse eröffnen einen Zugang zu einer großen Klasse nichtelementarer analytischer Funktionen (den elliptischen Modulfunktionen und Schwarzschen Dreiecksfunktionen), die ihrerseits mit der klassischen hypergeometrischen Differentialgleichung (VI. § 5) zusammenhängen. Im siebten Kapitel beweisen wir die Existenz differenzierbarer Fortsetzungen konformer Abbildungen auf den Rand im Falle glatt berandeter Gebiete beliebigen Zusammenhangs. Der Beweis beruht auf dem Transformationsverhalten des Bergmanschen Projektionsoperators und ist der komplexen Analysis mehrerer Variablen entlehnt. Das Ergebnis kann dann zum Aufbau einer Theorie der Hardy-Räume auf glatt berandeten Gebieten herangezogen werden - siehe 4 -und führt gleichzeitig zu Regularitätssatzen der Potentialtheorie - siehe 3. 2. Die Konstruktion der universellen Überlagerung eines ebenen Gebietes liefert oft entscheidende Informationen über das Gebiet selbst; dafür geben wir in Kapitel IV, § 6 typische Beispiele. Wir widmen daher zwei Kapitel (II und IV) der elementaren Theorie Riemannscher Flächen und dem Beweis des Uniformisierungssatzes; der Beweis wird durch Konstruktion der Greenschen Funktion geführt, also mit potentialtheoretischen Hilfsmitteln
