Die Sozialwissenschaften stehen in der aktuellen Diskussion vor der Herausforderung, den Status der Moderne zu überdenken. Die von den Klassikern angebotenen Grundkoordinaten zur Bestimmung moderner Gesellschaften bieten keine sicheren Leitorientierungen mehr. Weder lässt sich die heutige Situation durch Webers genetische Fragestellung erfassen, der eine Divergenzthese zugrunde lag - westliche Moderne versus Tradition in anderen Kulturen - noch durch Parsons Konvergenzthese, die einen universellen Modernisierungspfad unterstellt. Die These einer "Vielfalt der Moderne" tritt an, für diese Problemlage ein Theorieangebot zu unterbreiten. Bestehende sozialtheoretische Begriffe, Konzepte und Modelle müssen neu überdacht und für das Verständnis der "Entwestlichung der Moderne" weiterentwickelt werden. Die westliche Moderne ist zwar die historisch erste und weiterhin eine wichtige Referenzkultur, sie ist aber nicht die einzig mögliche Ausprägung der Moderne. Modernisierung und Verwestlichung sind nicht deckungsgleich. Neben generellen theoretischen Überlegungen, die das Konzept "Vielfalt und Einheit der Moderne" präzisieren und es mit dem der Globalisierung und der Weltgesellschaft konfrontieren, wird der Problematik an einzelnen Kulturkreisen oder Ländern nachgegangen.
