Bernd Brunner hat unter dem Titel "Eine kurze Geschichte der Bären" (ID 48/05) bereits ein umfangreiches Buch mit ähnlichem Inhalt veröffentlicht. Es stimmt nach Aussage des Autors allerdings mit dem vorliegenden Buch nur teilweise überein und die übernommenen Teile sollen grundlegend überarbeitet worden sein. Die (Kultur-)Geschichte des Menschen ist eng mit den Bären verbunden. Das Verhältnis der Menschen zu den starken und gefährlichen Bären, die aufrecht stehend, dem Menschen sehr ähnlich sind, reicht in der Entwicklungsgeschichte der Menschheit sehr weit zurück und schwankt zwischen Angst und Bewunderung. In weiten Teilen der Erde hat der Bär dem Menschen weichen müssen, sodass viele ihn nur noch von Zoobesuchen oder aus dem Fernsehen kennen. In diesem Buch geht es um die gemeinsame Geschichte von Bären und Menschen, die in ihren vielfältigen Facetten sehr unterhaltsam und gleichzeitig lehrreich beleuchtet wird. Mit zahlreichen Illustrationen. Empfohlen ab mittelgroßen Bibliotheken, in denen der o.g. Titel nicht vorhanden ist. (2 S) (Günter Pflaum)
