Anders als es der Buchtitel erwarten lässt, steht in diesem Buch des Tübinger Hirnforschers (vgl. ID-G 51/05) die Neuroplastizität, d.h. die Formbarkeit des Gehirns, im Mittelpunkt. Grundlage sind dabei neurowissenschaftliche Untersuchungen, die der Autor und seine Mitarbeiter selbst durchgeführt haben. Birbaumer widmet sich u.a. den Hirnvorgängen beim Erlernen und beim Verlust von Selbstkontrolle. Er stellt die Bedeutung der Neuroplastizität im Zusammenhang mit Krankheiten wie dem Locked-in-Syndrom, Epilepsie, Schlaganfall, Ängsten, Depressionen, Parkinson, Demenz, ADS und Suchterkrankungen dar und zeigt das seiner Einschätzung nach große Potenzial von Methoden wie Neurofeedback. Kritisch setzt er sich mit Patientenverfügungen und Sterbehilfe auseinander.
